What’s new on Netflix in September 2018? More Netflix originals than you could possibly watch and brand-new seasons of some of your favorite shows.

Netflix is dropping a staggering 52 originals in September. That includes the return of Chef’s Table, BoJack Horseman, American Vandal, Iron Fist, and Atypical, as well a few new Netflix original anime (Dragon Pilot: Hisone & Masotan, Lost SongLast Hope, and The Piano Forest. And I have a feeling Black Panther will shatter some streaming records when it lands Sept. 4.

But I’m most excited for Norm Macdonald Has a Show. Netflix has struggled with talk shows—both The Break with Michelle Wolf and The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale were canned in August—but I’m optimistic. Macdonald already has one standup special on NetflixHitler’s Dog, Gossip, and Trickeryand he’s been running a version of this talk show on YouTube for years. Plus, the initial lineup of guests looks promising: Drew Barrymore, David Spade, Judge Judy, David Letterman, Jane Fonda, Chevy Chase, M. Night Shyamalan, Michael Keaton, and Saturday Night Live‘s Lorne Michaels. At the very least, I’ll tune into his episode with country music outlaw Billy Joe Shaver.

Here’s everything that’s new on Netflix in September 2018—and what’s leaving the service soon. (For a deeper dive into upcoming Netflix release dates, check out our rolling guide here.)

What’s new on Netflix in September 2018: Editor’s picks

Black Panther (available Sept. 4)

Blending sci-fi and fantasy, director Ryan Coogler brought new life to the Marvel franchise this year. Starring Chadwick Boseman as the superhero king T’Challa, this movie introduced the world to Wakanda, a secretive African nation with super-advanced technology and a rich cultural backstory. Much of the conversation around Black Panther focuses on its impact as a blockbuster with a predominantly Black cast. It set a precedent for Hollywood, telling an unabashedly political story about colonization and the African diaspora. On top of all that, it’s a damn good action movie. Packed with already-iconic moments, it earned praise for its witty dialogue, stellar cast, and visual worldbuilding. —Gavia Baker-Whitelaw

The Innocents

The Innocents is a unique combination of Scandinavian mystery thriller and teen paranormal romance, starring a 16-year-old girl who discovers she has dangerous shapeshifting powers. Stylishly shot and cleverly written, it’s great for teens and adults alike. One of Netflix’s best. —Gavia Baker-Whitelaw

Like Father

After being left at the altar, Rachel and her estranged father end up on her honeymoon cruise together, not so much making up for lost time as trying to endure the awkwardness of it all. While formulaic at times, the light comedy succeeds mostly because of the great chemistry between the two leads, Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer, who are more alike than they care to acknowledge—and all of the ridiculous activities aboard the cruise. —Austin Powell

Scarface (available Sept. 1)

Scarface is a movie that has been so totally devoured by pop culture, it’s hard to approach it simply as a film. Yet beyond all the famous one-liners, there’s still a great movie there, one that both stands on its own and exists as the very embodiment of ‘80s excess. Brian De Palma, working from a script written by Oliver Stone, pushes everything to the limit and then a bit further. The performances from Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer are unforgettable, despite being reduced a thousand times to parody. The movie’s handling of race might not hold up so well, but if you’ve gone your whole life without seeing Scarface, you should finally find out what you’ve been missing. —Chris Osterndorf

Disenchantment

Disenchantment is Matt Groening’s first series since Futurama, setting its sights on fantasy. No element is off-limits for parody as it chronicles the mishaps and adventures of a rebellious princess (Abbi Jacobson), an elf (Nat Faxon), and a demon (Eric Andre) in a kingdom that has a life of its own—helped in part by its fantastic voice cast. But while the fantasy elements are a delight and create some hilarious moments, some of the more human elements feel outdated and not as clever or revolutionary as the writers believe them to be. —Michelle Jaworski
