During tonight’s Democratic debate, some people are listening to Mayor Pete Buttigieg. Specifically, they’re listening to his tone of voice.

The debate, hosted by PBS NewsHour and Politico, brought seven candidates to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. And starting with a question about President Donald Trump’s impeachment, debate listeners were quick to notice Buttigieg’s seemingly forced deep voice.

Is it lower? You be the judge.

“At the end of the day this is beyond public opinion, this is beyond polls, this is beyond politics,” Buttigieg answered. “The president left the House with no choice.”

Long pauses and tone changes caught the ears of several Twitter users.

“Is it just me or did Pete’s voice get deeper? He must be so scared he’ll accidentally answer a question like ‘idk girl’,” @rosedommu tweeted.

“Why does Pete sound like he’s lowering his voice on purpose? #demdebate” @Dan_Plane tweeted.

Others heard it, too.

On center stage is Vice President Joe Biden and he is the candidate most commonly associated with President Barack Obama. But tonight listeners are comparing Buttigieg’s stage voice to the memorable boom of the former president.

Unfortunately for Buttigieg, Twitter users aren’t the only ones ganging up on him tonight. He’s also getting attacked on stage by a number of Democrats.
