‘Game of Thrones’ really left a to-go cup on set

Is this canon now?

Sunday night’s episode of Game of Thrones, “The Last of the Starks,” opens with a lot of drinking. Everyone who survived the Battle of Winterfell is celebrating the defeat of the Night King (thanks, Arya!). While most of these characters choose an alcoholic beverage to toast their victory, Daenerys Targaryen appears to prefer Starbucks coffee.

Many viewers noticed a to-go coffee cup placed in from of Daenerys in a shot in “The Last of the Starks.” In case you missed it—likely due to the show’s lack of lighting—watch this clip below:

There are a couple of theories about this lone coffee cup in Westeros. The first one is that the crew was so rushed to get this last season out that it didn’t notice (or perhaps did not care) that the cup was in the shot. Maybe they didn’t want to re-shoot it and thought no one would notice.

Another theory: Is Starbucks canon in Game of Thrones? Did HBO sign some deal with Starbucks? If so, they’re doing a terrible job with product placement because the logo on the coffee cup is blurry and hard to make out. We’re not actually sure if it’s Starbucks-brand coffee.

Either way, everyone seems to love this Game of Thrones goof.

We just have one question: What’s the queen’s coffee order?

Update 3:39pm CT, May 6: In a statement, HBO said: “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”

Update 8:56am CT, May 7: HBO has edited the coffee cup out of the scene. It no longer appears in the episode.
