6 cat books your life is incomplete without

There’s no such thing as too much cat.

Dot Recs

As those of us who owns cats know, it’s more than just adopting a pet. It’s a complete lifestyle. We own scores of pet hair rollers. Avoiding black clothing becomes a habit since we’re always covered in fur. Your cat has one name and 65 nicknames. And if you still only have one, it won’t be long before you just can’t resist buying a second. And a third.

Cat people also tend to like cat humor, which is great since there’s a lot of it out there these days. The internet adores cats, and many owners have made amazing tributes to these little deities by creating books about them. There are scores, of course, but we think these are a few of the very best cat books there are.

1) Neko Atsume Kitty Collector Haiku

Based on the enormously popular phone game of the same name, Neko Atsume took the world by storm back in 2017. Collecting cats quickly became everyone’s favorite pastime (including The Daily Dot staff, who all played happily). This book is a collection of haiku divided by season, and of course accompanied by Neko Atsume‘s unmistakable art. With poems like “We went out to fish/I ate everything we caught/I have no regrets,” it’s pretty easy to see why this is a no-brainer for your cat book collection. And if you’re still trying to get every cat Neko Atsume has to offer, you might wanna check out the companion book Where Am I Meow? as well.

2) Miyoko Ihara: Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat

As cat books go, there’s really nothing else like the story of Misao and Fukumaru. The elderly Japanese woman found the white cat in her shed one day and decided to keep it as a companion. They quickly became inseparable, which is documented in this beautiful photobook. The text is in Japanese, so unfortunately you won’t be able to read it unless you know the language. But trust us – the photos within tell you all the story you need to know.

3) I Could Pee on This

If you’ve ever wondered what your cats are thinking (and let’s be real, every cat owner on Earth has spent more time pondering this then they’d like to admit), this book may answer that question for you. I Could Pee on This presents poetry with titles like “Who Is That on Your Lap?,” “This Is My Chair,” and “Kneel Before Me.” Now the next time your cat is glaring at you for no reason, you can imagine the sonnet it’s composing in its tiny mind.

4) How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You

Many cat owners (and non-cat owners for that matter) wonder if while we think we are in control, the cat is the one that’s really pulling all the strings. And if you’ve read Stephen King’s Cat’s Eye, you might even think they’re out to kill you. The funny folks behind the webcomic The Oatmeal penned this collection of its best comics about felines, and it is a total riot. No cat books collection is complete without this one.

5) The Inner Life of Cats

Laughing at your cat is always good fun, but like us, you may also be genuinely curious as to how cats work. Author Thomas McNamee was too, which is why he penned the book with more of the science behind how cats react, think and play. He does an excellent job of walking the reader through the basics of a kitten’s physiological and psychological development too. The more you know about your cat, the better of a relationship you can have with it (and who doesn’t want to be loved by a cat?).

6) The Big New Yorker Book of Cats

You may be a cat lady (or a cat dude), but that doesn’t mean you can’t make stylish choices about what books should grace your coffee table. The Big New Yorker Book of Cats would sit nicely next to other large collectible books, and features well-known writers like Margaret Atwood, Roald Dahl and Haruki Murakami in its pages. Just because you’ve covered with cat hair doesn’t mean you still can’t be classy.
