It's dark and gritty but without any of the campiness of 'Venom.'

Our first look at Morbius, Sony’s take on the Spider-Man villain and vampire, is here, and it’s leaning directly into the dark and gritty tone of Venom—literally. The trailer is very dark and without much color throughout—without any of the campiness or inherent horniness.

At the center of Morbius is Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), who accidentally becomes a vampire after attempting to cure himself of a rare blood disease that leaves him weak. But that transformation, which we catch glimpses of in the trailer, gives Morbius, a bunch of new abilities. Among those, he notes, are “Increased strength and speed, the ability to use echolocation, and an overpowering urge to consume blood.”

“I feel I’m more alive than ever,” Morbius says.

Much of the trailer feels like it’s straight out of bad early ’00s superhero movie with the exception to the nods it makes to other superhero movies. You can see a rendition of the Spider-Man costume from the Sam Raimi trilogy painted on a wall with the word “Murderer” sprayed on top, although the appearance of Michael Keaton (who played Adrian Toomes and Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming) at the end of the trailer loops in the MCU. And while remixes of classic songs are becoming more common in trailers, the trailer’s rendition of “Für Elise” is not doing Morbius any favors.

Morbius will arrive in theaters July 31.
