28 years after the debut of a manga that launched one of Japan’s most beloved franchises of all time, the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell only recently made its debut in America. While the casting raised a lot of hackles due to whitewashing claims, the film was beautifully crafted in every way.
The film’s companion book, The Art of Ghost in the Shell, is a hefty hardcover suitable for coffee table display. It documents everything from the making of the film’s props (created by the wildly talented folks at Weta Workshop) to the task of bringing the series’ titular characters to life once again.
Furthermore, longtime fans that are skeptical about the live-action film may be convinced otherwise by the process of its creation after seeing the book. Not only is the attention to detail painstaking, but many of the people that worked on the film came into it as hardcore fans of the franchise since debut. From the famous shelling scene where the Major’s brain is inserted into her mechanical body to the final conflict between her and elusive hacker Puppet Master, it’s clear these scenes have been created with tremendous care.
