Some astrology books are as dense and boring as textbooks–and for a complex subject like this, it makes untangling the inner workings of it all even tougher. Despite the struggle, astrologers have spent their entire career carefully dissecting and interpreting this information for students and clients with no prior experience. So, it only makes sense that the beginners’ astrology books penned by these experts (now turned authors) would be just as revealing and easy-to-comprehend as receiving a reading

The study of astrology isn’t simple. Mastering it will take a lot of dedication and patience. Thankfully, there are resources out there that can help you study and eventually nail more than just the basics of astrology. So without further ado, here’s our handpicked list of personal favorites and bestselling astrology books for beginners.

Best astrology books for beginners

1) Best astrology book for self-help success: Astrology for Happiness and Success by Mecca Woods

Mecca Woods has been an astro-coach for quite some time. Her work has been featured everywhere from Essence to Tarot.com. Woods even hosted TLC’s Stargazing and now co-hosts the podcast Stars On Fire. So if her name sounds familiar, that’s because Woods has put in work to make sure it’s recognized.

Woods’ first book, Astrology for Success and Happiness, details the ways in which she’s used astrology to benefit her own life. And now she’s sharing the secrets of her success with you! This book details the ways the signs can grow and nurture the relationships that mean the most to them. Whether it’s romantic, platonic, or familial, Woods provides you with rituals that will strengthen your bond and make love abundant.

The book also discusses how astrology and self-care sort of go hand-in-hand. Each zodiac has different needs and preferences, the ways we take care of ourselves aren’t universal. This is why the author offers tips and exercises for taking care of yourself and your space based on what each of the signs needs most.

To top it all off, Woods has included self-affirming mantras and thought-provoking journaling activities to give each of the signs the final push they need to start on their dream career.

If you like this book, make sure to check out the author’s other work! Currently, Woods’ has a zodiac-inspired coloring book series as well as an astrology journal due to shelves this summer.

Price: $9.99 (regularly $14.99)

2) Best astrology book for queer folks: Queer Cosmos: The Astrology of Queer Identities and Relationships by Colin Bedell

Finally! An astrology book that isn’t dated with concepts of harsh gender binaries and only assumptions of heterosexual compatibility. Written by a gay Gemini, this book is insightful, relatable, and filled with uplifting and supportive anecdotes.

It’s a quick read, too–which is always appreciated! You don’t necessarily need to follow along in a chapter-by-chapter manner, either. But I do suggest reading the entirety of the introduction before you bounce around. It’s in the intro where you’ll get a heartwarming look at how Bedell gathered his research and conclusions. Which might not seem like it matters, but trust me, it does.

The “pep talk” he provides goes further than any introduction to astrology that I’ve seen. It discourages the shame that many members of the LGBTQIA+ struggle with, even well after coming out. Bedell then goes on to provide examples of how we can use astrology to forage deep, meaningful connections. Whether it’s for a romantic relationship or not, it doesn’t matter.

So aside from the detailed pairings that describe potential relationship dynamics, this book is also highly therapeutic. I’d call it a must-read for everyone–queer or not! I personally would love to see Bedell’s unassuming way of interpreting the stars to become the foundation of all astrologers.

Price: $18.95 (regularly $22.95)

5) Best beginner astrology book for understanding the role your moon plays: Astrology for the Soul by Jan Spiller

Astrologer Jan Spiller holds the keys to your best life in this astrology book. Spiller offers you an introduction to astrology and how to use it to your advantage. One of her most invaluable messages here has to do with a point that beginner astrologers often overlook. The North Node!

The author will enlighten you on how to locate the North Node of the Moon in your chart. Then Spiller will walk you through interpreting it based on its position and any aspects it holds. Allowing readers to understand its influence in their lives. This book also includes exercises that will help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself, your strengths, and your flaws.

Reviewers claim that this book is so jam-packed with information that you’ll walk away feeling like you’ve read an encyclopedia’s worth of knowledge. It’s written in a very easy-to-follow manner, too, so you’ll actually have a chance at absorbing the wisdom.

6) Best astrology book for love and relationship predictions: The Astrology of Love & Sex: A Modern Compatibility Guide by Annabel Gat

If you’re really curious about the differences in which zodiac signs date, flirt, and maybe even get it on, The Astrology of Love & Sex is what you need. This book explores the romantic and sensual sides of the zodiac and nothing else. Each sign gets its own chapter, and astrologer Annabel Gat divulges (in detail!!) how each sign likes to flirt, date, and fool around. This book candidly explores love and lust in today’s sexually fluid world.

According to the publisher, the book discusses love philosophies to sexual inclinations that leave no-one out. Readers will enjoy dissecting and analyzing each passage. With unique compatibility profiles matching every sign and a quiz to identify your star match—wrapped in an all-foil case with gilded page edges, this is a fun and comprehensive guide to finding true cosmic love.

Carefully organized and thoughtfully assembled, The Astrology of Love & Sex breaks down each sign into specific subsections: their overarching personality, the signs’ at their worst and at their best, the signs’ in love, first impressions and flirting techniques, dating style, relationship approach, and sex. Then it goes one step further by describing the potential relationship compatibility between any two signs and even offers advice on how to navigate a relationship between historically incompatible signs.

Price: $18.63 (regularly $19.95)

7) Best beginner’s astrology book for learning how to use astrology to benefit your life: Star Power: A Simple Guide to Astrology for the Modern Mystic by Vanessa Montgomery

This isn’t any ol’ astrology book, it’s a handbook for modern mystics. Star Power breaks down everything you need to know about astrology into bite-sized, easy-to-understand chapters. The book includes a very brief history of astrology, a glossary of Astro-related terminology, a guide to learning how to read birth charts, among other detailed explanations. From the movement and meaning of individual planets to understanding the dynamic between zodiacs, this book does it all!

The author doesn’t skip a beat. Vanessa Montgomery set out to give the baby astrologers and witches an all-in-one guide so they wouldn’t need another book after this one. And wow, Montgomery nailed it. In the guide, the author will show you how to make sense of the houses and aspects and even turn you onto tracking future planetary shifts. Montgomery then explains the importance of the subjects and how these points can help you know more about yourself, your present life, and your future self. Readers will also discover which star sign they’re most compatible with, how the universe impacts their approach to love, wealth, creativity, and careers. Ultimately, Star Power showcases how you can take cosmic control of your universe.

Reviewers claim that this is a great book for a learned reader since it’s rather dense, but beginners would benefit from it too. Well, as long as they’ve got the dedication to sift through all the information.

Price: $14.99 (regularly $17.99)

8) Best beginner’s astrology book for underscoring the importance of numerology and how it works with astrology: The Power of Birthdays, Stars & Numbers: The Complete Personology Reference Guide by Saffi Crawford and Geraldine Sullivan

In this best astrology book for beginners, the two skilled astrologers Saffi Crawford and Geraldine Sullivan, guide you toward greater psychological insight, self-awareness, and a keen understanding of your unique position in the universe. Packed with an abundance of knowledge and clear, easy-to-interpret graphs and charts, The Power of Birthdays, Stars and Numbers provides guidance in a few different aspects.

The book discusses birthday forecasts (think sun sign astrology, famous people born on the same day as you, and how the day of the week you were born affects you on the universal level). The authors also explore the importance of fixed stars and what their role actually is and a thorough introduction to numerology.

Reviewers say this is a great book for beginners of mysticism because it discusses more than just the signs of the zodiac. This crash course in the basics of numerology is not to be overshadowed!

Price: $21.50 (regularly $30)

9) Best beginner’s astrology book for understanding the zodiac: Rulers of the Horoscope: Finding Your Way Through the Labyrinth by Alan Oken

Some people learn better by focusing on one piece of the puzzle at a time. If that sounds like you, Rulers of the Horoscope: Finding Your Way Through the Labyrinth is the beginner astrology book for you. It discusses two very important topics in astrology, which in my opinion, can be the hardest to nail down.

Alan Oken masterfully guides readers through the puzzle of understanding and analyzing the rulers of houses, their signs, and the nature of the houses they occupy and rule. According to the publisher, he defines and describes derivative houses, planetary and house rulerships, mutual reception, and the compatibility and nature of the importance of their placement in the horoscope. The astrological charts of well-known people are used as prime examples. Illustrated with detailed descriptions of planetary relationships, their positive and negative aspects, and the traditional and modern interpretation of the houses.

Alan Oken’s in-depth exploration of the ruler for each of the twelve houses and the rulers of the rising sign is an invaluable tool for astrology students and teachers alike. Reviewers love Oken’s detailed and easy-to-understand explanations, calling this required reading for all astrology beginners, students, and teachers!

Price: $19.95

10) Best beginner’s astrology book for basic explanations of birth charts: Chart Interpretation Handbook: Guidelines for Understanding the Essentials of the Birth Chart by Stephen Arroyo

Thousands of readers have found personal meaning in Arroyo’s bestselling astrology books. They’re widely used by a variety of experience levels, including students, practitioners, and teachers. Arroyo’s diction and syntax are a perfect balance of know-how and simplicity. Here, he shows how to develop reliable, in-depth interpretations for any birth chart.

Reviewers also claim this is one of the best astrology books for beginners. Since it covers everything from your big three placements to details on elements, aspects, and trines. However, it might be too simple for more advanced readers.

The book does somewhat lack discussion around astrology that’s unrelated to learning how to decipher a birth chart. So if you’re here to learn how to read a birth chart and nothing more, this is the book for you. But if you want more in-depth arguments surrounding astrology you might end up disappointed by this pick.

Price: $14.32

11) Best beginner-friendly book to sexology and astrology: Sextrology: The Astrology of Sex and the Sexes by Stella Starsky and Quinn Cox

Ever wondered if there was an astrology book that focused solely on the sex lives of the zodiac? Consider your wish granted!

According to the publisher, Sextrology accomplishes what no existing astrology book has ever achieved. It candidly explores sexual relationships from an astrological perspective. But without insulting the reader with new-age mumbo jumbo or sugary advice for capturing a mate. Sextrology uncovers the naked truth of all possible cosmic couplings with candor, imaginations, and a wry sense of humor.

The book focuses on the zodiac from a gender binary perspective, which is about the only issue I have with it. I personally believe that we need to incorporate more gender-neutral terminology in astrology in general. So this didn’t catch me off guard by any means, it was just disappointing to have to pick through the zodiac based on gender.

That said, this book is full of great information. So, if you can get around reading the binary gendered counterparts of the signs, you’ll walk away with an abundance of knowledge. Most of which relates to how femininity, masculinity, and sexuality play out within the zodiac. The book does explore queer sex, so it’s not totally insulting for the times.

Although this may come off as an NSFW read, it’s more about personality, gender, and sexual expression than anything else. The book also highlights compatibility between the signs in both gay and straight relationships.

Price: $25.49 (regularly $27)

12) Best beginner’s astrology book for understanding your interpersonal relationships, finances, and lifestyle: The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need by Joanna Martine Woolfolk

Now, I wouldn’t say this is the only astrology book you’ll ever need, but it is a good place to start! This book provides the compatibility between every sign (so 144 combinations) and dispenses advice about health, money, lifestyle, and romance. It also offers advice on dealing with the more complicated aspects of each sign. (Ya know, where all the negative stereotyping comes in).

The newest edition of this book also takes an even closer look at the inner life of the individual and the emotional needs that motivate a person. It’s really all about applying astrology to a person, not so much understanding astrological definitions if that makes sense.

According to reviewers, this is a great book for beginners because it breaks down the basics of astrology (as well as some newer contributions) into manageable pieces. That said, it does a lot of generalizing. (Which is helpful for those who have only dipped their toes into the subject). So if you’re looking for a more detailed read, this pick is probably too simple for you.

Price: on sale for $15.39 (regularly $19.95)

13) Best astrology book for kids: The Junior Astrologer’s Handbook: A Kid’s Guide to Astrological Signs, the Zodiac, and More by Nikki Van De Car

One of the only books on astrology written for middle schoolers, The Junior Astrologer’s Handbook teaches kids about the cosmos and how they can use astrology in their everyday lives. Whether they’re tackling school, stress, or a difficult situation with a friend.

Written directly to children ages 8 to 12, this book includes everything needed to entertain and educate cosmically-inquisitive kids. From personality quizzes to kid-friendly crafts that are tailored to each of the zodiac signs. This beginner’s astrology guide uses a hands-on approach to teach kids the basics. It even includes an easy-to-digest guide to cosmic events (like mercury retrograde and solar and lunar eclipses). As well as meditations for focus, compassion, and creativity and so much more! Complete with introductions to the twelve zodiac signs, their planetary rulers, and more, this is a practical guide for any kid.

I had the chance to check this book out and was pleasantly surprised by not only the amount of technical information it provides, but the approachable way it describes it. From the most astrology-obsessed to the cosmically-indifferent kid, this workbook will inspire strength, creativity, and compassion. It’s a must-have for every child’s personal library!
