President Donald Trump’s actions have only accentuated the differences of our divided nation, but they are bringing together the highly competitive tech industry like never before.
On Sunday night, 96 companies including some of the biggest names in tech, filed an amicus brief opposing Trump’s executive action on immigration. The legal document was created a week after leading tech executives simultaneously issued individual statements on the refugee ban.
The document states barring refugees and green-card holders from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States inflicts “substantial harm” on American companies by hindering their abilities to attract talent; increasing costs imposed on business; making it more difficult for firms to compete in the international marketplace; and gives enterprises an incentive to build operations outside the United States.
“The Order makes it more difficult and expensive for U.S. companies to recruit, hire, and retain some of the world’s best employees,” the document states. “It disrupts ongoing business operations. And it threatens companies’ ability to attract talent, business, and investment to the United States.”
As it stands, refugees are able to enter the United States under normal screening procedures after a federal judge lifted the ban last week, but President Trump plans to fight back against the ruling.
The immigration ban led to global protests over the past week and forced a number of executives to leave Trump’s business advisory board.
Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Netflix highlight the list of entities featured in the amicus brief. Other well-known companies include eBay, Twitter, Intel, GoPro, Kickstarter, Yelp, Spotify, and Etsy.
