In an essay on Refinery29.com, Kesha has announced her latest single, a song inspired by the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex.

The song, “Here Comes the Change,” is meant to recognize the accomplishments of people like Ginsburg, who have fought to move the world toward justice and equality, while also recognizing that society still has a long way to go.

Kesha, whose full name is Kesha Rose Sebert, says in her essay that she was initially hesitant to be involved.

When I was first approached to write a song for the movie, I thought I was the wrong person for the job. For me, songwriting is such a personal process and it is almost always inspired by things I’ve experienced in my own life. The idea that I should be writing about someone else’s life, and that person would be Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was intimidating. ‘How could my voice matter in this context?’ I thought to myself,” she says.

Kesha also says she was disillusioned with the current political climate. “Sometimes the troubles of the world are so overwhelming, it is paralyzing,” she says. “And it’s true: One person may not be able to fix every problem.”

But the song encourages listeners to honor the legacy of trailblazers like Ginsburg and to “leave the world better than [you] found it.” The best way to do that, says Kesha, is by voting. That’s why the video features volunteers from HeadCount, encouraging viewers to register to vote.

The song is the latest entry into Kesha’s more empowered musical identity since releasing Rainbow in 2017, after a three-year legal battle with music producer Dr. Luke, whom the singer said sexually assaulted her.
