After all of the hype surrounding the Nintendo Switch and the NES Classic Edition over the past year, Nintendo went for a more low-key reveal to debut its latest console.
The company announced Thursday that it will release the Nintendo 2DS XL later this year. The 2DS XL will expand on the original 2DS while look and operate more like the Nintendo 3DS XL (but without the actual 3D capabilities). The new console will have more controls like the C-stick, include a camera, and be able to read Amiibo figures.
You can also close the console—something you couldn’t with the 2DS. And you’ll be able to use the same DS games as previous models, so if you already have a console you’ll already be set with games to play.

On the same day the 2DS XL will be available to buy, Nintendo will also release Hey Pikmin! and Miitopia for the console.
The 2DS XL will sell for $149.99, making it about $50 cheaper than the 3DS XL and near double the price of the original 2DS. It’s only half the price of the Nintendo Switch, which rings in at $299.99 and has been difficult to obtain.
For anyone who looked into purchasing a Nintendo DS system but wasn’t too fond of the 3D features, this could be a tempting option.
The Nintendo 2DS XL will be available to purchase in the U.S. starting July 28.
