We’re up-to-date on casting news, release dates, trailers, and more.
Netflix officially renewed The Punisher on Dec. 12, 2017, less than a month after season 1 arrived online. That’s a pretty solid vote of approval, considering it was renewed faster than Jessica Jones.
Marvel has four other Netflix series, so the schedule is pretty full. With that in mind, here’s what we know so far about The Punisher season 2.
The Punisher season 2 release date
Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Luke Cage will all return with new seasons in 2018. That means we can expect Iron Fist season 2 and Punisher in 2019—although it’s worth remembering that unlike normal TV, Netflix is free to invent its own schedule. We had to wait two and a half years between seasons of Jessica Jones, so Punisher may wind up arriving in 2020.

The Punisher season 2 cast and news
Jon Bernthal will return as Frank Castle, with Deborah Ann Woll expected to reprise her role as Karen Page. Beyond that, it’s too early for any fresh casting news.
We won’t be surprised if season 2 features a new supporting cast, since season 1 already resolved Frank Castle’s quest for revenge, along with the role of David “Micro” Lieberman and his family. It was a pretty self-contained story, which feels appropriate for the Punisher. He’s generally a lone wolf, and this gives season 2 a lot of freedom to adapt a different idea from the comics or forge ahead with something new.
Marvel’s Netflix shows have a troubling habit of switching showrunners, but Steve Lightfoot is still onboard for The Punisher‘s second season. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Lightfoot suggested that while season 1 becomes an origin story for Billy Russo (Ben Barnes) becoming the supervillain Jigsaw, he might not be the central villain for season 2. “One of the villains I love is Barracuda,” Lightfoot said. “I think he’s great fun. I also really like O’Brien. I thought she was always really cool.” Both characters come from Punisher MAX, which is generally regarded as one of the best runs of Punisher comics.
The Punisher season 2 trailer
The season hasn’t even been written yet, so it’s safe to say we won’t see a trailer until late 2018 at the earliest. In the meantime, here’s a featurette from season 1!

The Punisher season 2 story
Marvel Studios doesn’t do direct adaptations, so while The Punisher takes inspiration from the comics, we may see another original story for season 2.
With organized crime already covered by the other Marvel/Netflix heroes, it would make sense for The Punisher to continue with its military themes. Most of the characters in season 1 were impacted by war in some way, and the story followed Frank Castle’s disillusionment with the military/industrial complex. We only know one thing for sure: Season 2 will be violent and gritty, with Castle treading a fine line between hero and villain.
