'I've seen friends have that kind of constructive dialogue about 6 weeks before one of them files for divorce.'

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended President Donald Trump’s fiery public spat with Democratic leaders Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer at an Oval Office meeting on Tuesday as “constructive dialogue.”

In her statement, according to pool reports, Sanders admitted that there remained “major disagreement on the issue of border control” but emphasized that the three had “agreed to support the passage of historical Criminal Justice Reform.”

The meeting, however, was anything but civil.

It broke down over the funding the president’s plans for a Southern border wall, the contentious issue which could provoke a government shutdown on Dec. 21.

As Vice President Mike Pence sat silently between them, the Democrats and the president took shots at one another.

Trump repeatedly interrupted Pelosi as the two snapped about the recent midterm elections, which gave Democrats the House and altered the Washington power dynamic in a way set to give Trump more problems.

Eventually, Trump declared  that he’d be “proud to shut down the government” if he didn’t get his way with the border wall.

“If we don’t get what we want one way or the other, whether it’s through you, it’s through military, I will shut down the government,” he said. “I am proud to shutdown the government for border security… I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down.”

The heated debate spilled over into statements issued afterward and despite Sanders’ attempt to iron over the chaotic bout, the internet had plenty to say about what the display meant for politics and her framing it “constructive dialogue.”
