We’re still several months from seeing season 2.

While we may still be several months away from seeing The Mandalorian’s second season on Disney+, production for season 3 of the vastly popular series is already underway.

According to a new report from Variety, Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau has already been working on scripts for the third season for some time now. Lucasfilm vice president and executive creative director Doug Chiang and the art department have been looped into creating concept art for the third season.

For Star Wars, concept art has always been a big part of the process of imagining the galaxy far, far away from the very first Star Wars film all the way to The Mandalorian, much of which is eventually published in supplemental books or shared online. In the case of The Mandalorian, the show’s concept art has become an iconic part of each episode’s credits.

Per Variety, the production design team started working on The Mandalorian’s third season on April 20.

“We’ve just started pre-production and are looking into further adventures for the Mandalorian in Season 3,” a source told Variety.

It’s not that unusual for The Mandalorian creative team to get started working on a new season long before it’s officially confirmed by Disney+ and Lucasfilm. The cast already returned to film the show’s second season while the first season aired on Disney+, which wasn’t officially confirmed by Favreau until after the season 1 finale dropped. Production on season 2 ended last month just before the coronavirus shut down nearly all TV and film productions, and season 2 is still scheduled for an October 2020 release.

But as we wait for season 2 (and eventually season 3), we’ll at least have the Mandalorian docuseries debuting next month to hold us over.
