On Tuesday, attorney Adrienne Lawrence confirmed speculation that Cardi B was filing for divorce from 28-year-old Offset. The two married in September 2017 and have since had one daughter together, Kulture Kiari Cephus. An on-and-off-again couple, Cardi and Offset have kept their relationship extremely public, often showcasing both the highs and lows of their time together and simultaneously allowing fans to form their own opinions.

The internet has placed a roaring approval on the split, celebrating with memes. In 2018, accusations of Offset cheating on the now 27-year-old rapper led her to call the relationship quits after a long battle of trying to work things out. That same year, Offset crashed Cardi’s Rolling Loud set to publicly beg for forgiveness, which many fans labeled as a form of manipulation, guilt-tripping, and public humiliation. The public disapproval of the couple’s marriage has been ongoing as other accusations of Offset cheating resurfaced later.

According to Lawrence’s post, Cardi filed for a contested divorce, which means one party does not agree to the divorce and is willing to battle the separation. The documents were submitted in Fulton County, Georgia and a hearing has been set for Nov. 4, 2020. TMZ later confirmed that Cardi filed as the plaintiff and Offset is listed as the defendant, and that “there are no prospects for a reconciliation,” causing fans to express concern about the situation’s stake.

It is unclear whether the couple signed a prenup before Tuesday but court documentation states that Cardi is seeking “an equitable division of all marital assets.” Documents also confirm that Cardi is asking for primary physical and legal custody of their 2-year-old daughter, child support, and legal expenses to be paid by Offset. According to Lawrence, the common nature of celebrity divorces is a public statement released by PR reps. “The fact that Cardi filed first and hasn’t publicly addressed it tells you that something likely happened that set her off and made her wish to immediately protect her interests. This may be messy,” she tweeted.

As of now, both Cardi B and Offset have not made public statements about the divorce filing.
