One father found out his son was gay by unexpectedly walked in on him having sex with his boyfriend. This dad’s subsequent Reddit post, where he lovingly seeks advice on how to make his son feel comfortable, has the internet ready to dole out a ‘father of the year’ award.

The Twitter account @redditships, which shares the best of Reddit’s relationship posts, shared this kind dad’s post. It received thousands of likes and retweets, with many tipping their hats to the father and also offering up much-needed advice and support.

“I [45M] Walked in on son [16M] having gay sex and he’s become quite awkward and distant,” the title reads.

In the post, the father—only identified by his age (45)—explains that he went to his son’s room to offer him dessert and decided to enter without knocking. He assumed he wasn’t intruding because his son had company—a male friend who often came over to the house.

Boy, was that assumption wrong.  It turns it the son’s “friend” was actually his boyfriend of two years, and they were trying to sneak in a private moment when Dad stumbled upon them having sex.

“I don’t know if reacted that well – but not badly either, I just said something like ‘oh f*ck’ and shut the door again,” the teen’s father wrote. “I waited downstairs for maybe 20 minutes to see if they would come say anything but they didn’t so I went to bed.”

The dad went on to explain that he has no problem with his son being gay or having sex in his house, but he wants advice on how to help the kid feel less embarrassed about the whole situation.

“I’m also going to buy him a lock for his door and tell him that I want him to feel comfortable ‘doing it’ in the house with his boyfriend (I’d rather here than some dark alley with heroin needles and serial killers or anything like that) – but I’m not sure how to word it well, and also make the conversation as least awkward as possible,” he wrote.

Many were surprised by the “wholesome” Reddit post and voiced their support.

“Aww this is wholesome content,” one redditor commented.

“Great dad but there is probably nothing he can do to make his son not feel extremely mortified and embarrassed for a decent while,” Twitter user @jons611 wrote.

“Dad being accepting from the start is great,” another user wrote. “Dad wanting them to feel safe being intimate at home is an unexpected and great surprise.”

“This will make a great funny story when he’s much much older and no longer cares tho (depending on how you build your relationship and I think you’re doing that well),” another commented.

From the looks of the comments, it appears this Reddit father should be giving out advice on parenting instead of looking for it.
