If you’ve been awake for more than an hour today you’ve no doubt heard about the engagement of Prince Harry to American actress Meghan Markle. The news is dominating the headlines, and the website of the company that designed the coat Markle was wearing during the announcement already crashed.
The two have been dating for some time and engagement rumors have been swirling around, so it’s not exactly shocking news. With a quick glance around the internet, you can learn about everything from the ring (it includes two of Princess Diana’s diamonds and was designed by the prince himself) to when Markle plans to move her dogs (ASAP).
So all that’s really left is to highlight the best/funniest/weirdest tweets about the engagement.
We can start with this confusing one from the Telegraph.
Marrying Meghan Markle isn't a happy ending for Prince Harry – it's a happy beginning – @bryony_gordon #premium https://t.co/lIhAf7klB3

For some reason, the lead photo shows Prince Harry with the journalist who wrote the piece, not his future wife. Not everyone follows the Royal family or Meghan Markle’s acting career, and to those people it certainly looked like this woman was marrying the Prince.
Someone else pointed out this perfect clip from Markle’s series Suits.

Some questioned Markle’s motivations.
If only Caroline Aherne was still with us. She could ask Meghan, “… and what attracted you to the enormously rich heir to the throne?” https://t.co/EXtcDAdaSp

While online magazine JOE took the opportunity to point out that Markle is a well known and successful actress and that Prince Harry is lucky to be marrying her.

Of course, a lot of tweets focused on Markle’s race. Her mother is African-American and her father is Dutch-Irish.

So I've seen a black president of the United States, and now I'll see a black woman joining the British royal family. What a time to be alive.

Congrats #MeghanMarkle and #PrinceHarry. https://t.co/N9hEhyvHZD
Markel even got the blessing of her fictional father.
Congratulations to my TV daughter Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on the news of their wedding engagement. Harry you have her TV Father’s blessing. Robert Zane approves @Suits_USA

There was also a wild conspiracy afoot.
Prince Harry's kids will be Americans. What if one grows up to be president and is in line for the throne at the same time? Brits are playing long-ball here, but it's a smart move. They want America back and this is how they'll do it.

But perhaps the best tweet of all came from an incredibly optimistic young woman.

It looks like the couple is very happy indeed, but life out of the spotlight probably isn’t in their future.
