It’s already well known that octopuses are Machiavellian hell demons simply bidding their time until the oceans rise high enough that they can swarm our cities and ascend to their proper place as the dominate species on the planet, but it’s still fun to be reminded how smart and menacing they really are. And on the BBC’s latest episode of Super Smart Animals, we get to see a Super Smart Octopus getting his lunch.

Here, a devious octopus hangs out near a spot crab fishermen prefer because it knows crabs will be there, taking the bait and getting stuck in a cage, ripe for the eating. It’s basically the ocean equivalent of some cops parking right outside a bar’s parking lot.

Somehow, the octopus is able to escape just in the nick of time, as the crab pot is being pulled from the water.

Not that being hauled up onto a boat has ever stopped an octopus before.
