Following up on previous rumors, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Nintendo will release two new versions of the company’s popular Nintendo Switch as early as the 2019 holiday season. The two new models will reportedly be a cheaper version with fewer features—to phase out the Nintendo 3DS—and a powered-up version of the Switch, akin to Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro and Microsoft’s Xbox One X.
The company is seeking to give the console’s sales a bump since a lull has been present after its original, phenomenal launch in March 2017. Prior to its release, Nintendo was experiencing a period of stagnation thanks to the dismal sales of the Nintendo Wii U. This all changed with the release of the uber-successful Nintendo Switch. After the console’s launch, the company returned to the status of the “Big Three” first-party video game hardware developers alongside Microsoft and Sony.
In terms of a release or announcement, things are still in a very early phase. The Journal’s report states that Nintendo “is still debating what new hardware and software features to include in the upgrade.” One possible improvement would be an upgraded screen like those found in “more recent smartphone LCDs,” which would “make it brighter, thinner and more energy-efficient.”
More details are expected at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, this June.
