We ate Krispy Kreme’s ‘Ghostbusters’ donuts in the name of journalism

It's like having the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man march right down your throat.

It may be National Coffee Day, but here at the Daily Dot it’s all about the doughnuts. We’re suckers for a good food gimmick, and today marks the launch of Krispy Kreme’s Ghostbusters doughnuts in honor of the movie’s 30th anniversary.

While the promotion runs through Oct. 31, the folks at my local Krispy Kreme in Austin, Texas, say the nostalgia-laced sugar bombs have been hugely popular so far. The first batch sold out in just hours this morning.

“We had to stop everything we were doing to make more,” said Tonie, the cheerful cashier who took my money and handed over a spooky dozen.

The Ghostbusters donuts are your typical Krispy Kreme fare, only instead of custard or jelly, they’re filled with marshmallow cream. The first bite hits you like a sugar punch to the face. Though the filling cavity doesn’t overwhelm the rest of the pastry, the marshmallow cream paired with a generous layer of icing may be too much for even the sweetest sweet tooth. I found myself reaching for coffee and water to cut the saccharine assault on my tongue.

The marshmallow creme itself lacked the sticky consistency of real marshmallow or even the spreadable marshmallow fluff that comes in a jar. Instead, it was somewhere between a frosting and a custard. I could also detect a hint of coffee flavor, but that may just be the effect of being whipped up in a store with overpowering coffee smells.

Piling on to the sugar bonanza, the little hat on the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and the Ghosbusters logo are stamped out of pressed sugar. The consistency is similar to those little sugar skulls you get around Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.

Overall, the $10.29 cost per dozen seems to be worth it if you want to delight your coworkers (and slowly kill them with heart disease). Just be sure to grab enough coffee to wash these adorable, diabolical little pastries down.
