You can find just about everything on Reddit, except for a decent mobile experience from the company itself. That finally changed on Thursday with the launch of the first official app built by the company.
The official Reddit app for iOS and Android is the first from-scratch app built by the social sharing platform. The sleek, simple apps put all of the so-called “front page of the internet” at the fingertips of the user.
The app itself is a mobile-first approach to the site, which is generally clumsy to navigate on mobile browsers. It’s clean and colorful design put the content the user wants to see at the forefront, and a simple menu makes it easy to hop between favorite subreddits to see what’s new.
The Reddit app is a departure from Alien Blue, the fan-made app that Reddit eventually bought and counted upon for its mobile presence. The company had planned to overhaul that app, but instead started from the group up on its own.
That doesn’t mean familiar features of Alien Blue have been done away with, though; the dark theme that replaced the piercing white background and made Reddit more navigable at night has been adopted into the new app.
Alien Blue loyalists won’t necessarily have to ditch the app quite yet; Reddit is continuing to keep the app alive for those who already have it installed. However, it will be removed from the iOS App Store. The paid iPad version of Alien Blue will remain in the App Store until Reddit creates its own app for bigger screens.
