Bernie Sanders played a boisterous rabbi in a low-budget 1999 film

Well, this was unexpected.

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who narrowly lost the Iowa caucus on Monday, once had a cameo as a rambling rabbi in a low-budget movie.

In My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception (1999), the independent senator from Vermont played Rabbi Manny Schewitz (it’s a pun), who gave a toast in his big scene and waxed nostalgic about the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Watch Sanders showcase the graceful panache of a veteran character actor.

The clip reappeared in the spotlight late Tuesday night thanks to reporter Sam Knight. BuzzFeed likewise noted its existence back in April.

The film itself featured 1980s pop queen Debbie Gibson, comedian Dom Deluise, and one-hit wonder Vitamin C. It’s a comedy about wedding antics that also featured cameos from members of jam-rock legend Phish. According to a three-year-old user review on IMDb:

I have loved many Jewish and Italian folks in my life, and I loved said humor in a genuinely warm-hearted way. Anyway, I rented this film, mailed it back yesterday, but the more I think about it and talk to people about it, the more I wish I still had it and could show it to certain friends and relatives. Not that it was perfect (see my rating). The scene with the 3 girls who attempted to sing “Angel in the Morning” was pretty hard to sit through, and the members of the “band” continuously putting down Jazz music irritated me. But all in all, I’m going now to a website where I can purchase this hilarious film!

OK then.
