Cosmopolitan is taking a special look at the figures and memes that made the internet a special place in 2016. The magazine caught up with the dudes who coined “dicks out for Harambe” and even let Chewbacca Mom Candace Payne speak her piece.

Perhaps the most fascinating look at viral fame this year is a piece on the “Damn Daniel” boys that not only checks in with them but highlights what it means to be a meme kid and aspire to more.

Turns out Daniel Lara has set his sights on modeling and theater while Josh Holz aspires to be a YouTuber and has focused his efforts on video editing and videography.

They’ve got a talent agent and share a manager and lawyer. Neither are looking to create a new viral moment because the boys acknowledge that that’s not how those things work. Instead, they’ve been realistic about the rise and fall of the meme that turned their worlds upside down.

“I’ve always seen myself as Daniel. I’ve never seen myself as famous or a celebrity,” Lara tells Cosmopolitan.
