There is no truer meme than ‘Sometimes… things that are expensive…are worse’

But we buy expensive items anyway.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the most expensive version of an item isn’t always the best option. (See: 3D movies, $18 burritos, and the VIP section of a music festival.) You could almost say that sometimes it’s… worse than the cheaper item.

A new meme highlights our feelings about expensive items that aren’t even that great. It’s pulled from a scene in the web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. In one episode, the character Freckle says, “Sometimes… things that are expensive… are worse” when referring to a set of expensive linen sheets that aren’t soft. Freckle (played by Jason Greene) usually gets the best lines in the show, but that one particularly stood out. Maybe because many of us have spent too much money on a product that was intended to better our lives in some way.

(The quote comes at the 1:22 mark of the video.)

People started sharing the quote after episodes of the series were posted to YouTube last month. Since then, we’ve seen several versions of the meme pop up, from Star Wars references to food criticisms to movies to American healthcare.

While the internet is having fun with the meme, people are also starting to watch the show where it came from. And the reactions are positive.

People really love Freckle.

“Sometimes…things that are expensive…are worse” is so applicable to our world that it’s hard not to keep saying it.

May this meme outlast our disposable income.
