Don’t listen to Jeremy Renner when he downplays an Avengers/Guardians team-up

Sorry, Renner. There's no way the Guardians don't show up in 'Avengers: Infinity War'.

After Jeremy Renner voiced doubts about the idea of an Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy crossover, some fans are wondering if they’ve been wrong about Avengers: Infinity War all along.

“Is that going to happen?” wondered Renner, discussing the possibility of an Avengers/Guardians team-up at Wizard World Comic Con Chicago. “Do you know more than I know? I think they’ll probably do another Guardians movie, and we still have Avengers 3 and 4 [Infinity War, Part 1 and Part 2] to do.”

So, does this mean that the rumors of an Infinity War crossover are false? In a word: no.

Renner is clearly going out of his way to give an inconclusive answer. It’s a classic technique for Marvel Studios actors who are prohibited on pain of death from revealing any spoilers.

More importantly, there is no way Marvel introduced the Guardians team with such a popular movie only to let them languish in a separate franchise for long. If we learned anything from Thor’s pointless psychic bath subplot in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it’s that Marvel is obsessed with linking its franchises at all costs.

Guardians of the Galaxy is already linked to the other Marvel movies via Thanos and the Infinity Gems, which played a pivotal role in The Avengers. Unless the entire franchise to date has been a huge fake-out (which admittedly would be pretty hilarious), Infinity War will involve the Avengers fighting Thanos over magical space rocks, probably with some kind of help from the Guardians of the Galaxy.

But don’t blame Jeremy Renner for lying about it. It’s hard to promote a movie when you’re not officially allowed to confirm a single detail of the plot.
