Hot on the heels of Hollywood’s Ghost in the Shell movie, we’re getting another reboot.

The new movie will be animated like the 1995 original and produced by the same studio. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the anime reboot will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) and Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed).

After the lukewarm response to the Hollywood remake, this lineup will be a relief to fans of the original Ghost in the Shell. On the other hand, it also puts a lot of pressure on the Japanese directors. The first movie came out 22 years ago and has influenced a whole host of cyberpunk movies since then. It may be an uphill battle to film an anime reboot that both lives up to the legacy of the original and still feels fresh within such a popular genre.

THR described the movie as a new adaptation of the manga, so there’s plenty of opportunity for it to stand out from the original anime, rather than being a direct remake.
