Greta Thunberg, the teenage climate activist, said on Tuesday that it is “extremely likely” she and her father had coronavirus.

The activist detailed having symptoms of the virus after returning from a trip to central Europe in an Instagram post on Tuesday. In the post, she also urged people to follow the advice of local authorities and stay home to stop the spread of the virus.

Thunberg said she has stayed inside for the last two weeks after she started feeling tired, had shivers, a sore throat, and was coughing. She added that her father had similar symptoms that were “more intense and with a fever.”

“In Sweden you can not test yourself for COVID-19 unless you’re in need of emergent medical treatment. Everyone feeling ill are told to stay at home and isolate themselves,” Thunberg wrote in the Instagram post. “I have therefore not been tested for COVID-19, but it’s extremely likely that I’ve had it, given the combined symptoms and circumstances.”

In the same post, Thunberg called for her 10 million followers to “follow the advice from experts and your local authorities” and to stay home to slow the spread of the virus because she said that she “almost didn’t feel ill.”

“Had it not been for someone else having the virus simultaneously I might not even have suspected anything,” Thunberg wrote. “Then I would just have thought I was feeling unusually tired with a bit of a cough. And this it what makes it so much more dangerous.”

Thunberg was named the Time person of the year for 2019 for her work in bringing attention to climate change.
