Pity poor Melania.

Following a visit to Donald Trump’s White House this week on an official state visit, French first lady Brigitte Macron had some thoughts on Melania Trump and why she always seems to look so miserable.

French president Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte spent plenty of time with the president and the first lady—and there were even some intimate moments between the husbands—and now, Brigitte Macron said she feels sorry for Melania Trump because she’s so confined to the White House.

She told Le Monde, via the Huffington Post, that Melania “cannot do anything.”

“She can’t even open a window at the White House,” Brigitte Macron said. “She can’t stick her nose outside. She’s much more constrained than I am. Me, every day, I’m out in Paris.”

Apparently, the two women got along well, as Macron called her “really fun.”

“She’s a woman with a lot of character but tries to hide it. She laughs very easily about everything but shows it less than I do,” Macron said. “… We have the same sense of humor. We laugh a lot together … [She is] kind, charming, intelligent, and very open.”

Since Donald Trump was inaugurated, the internet has had plenty of fun keeping track of how miserable Melania looks, whether she’s being ditched by her husband during bad weather or appreciating her impressive ability to avoid touching him at just about every public opportunity.

But she also has her defenders, as Twitter dunked all over conservative commentator Erick Erickson this week when he called her State Dinner menu “froo-froo garbage.”

There are also reports that she simply doesn’t enjoy living at the White House or being the first lady and that this isn’t the life she wanted.

But perhaps just getting out of the house and seeing other people is good for her. After all, she looked happy while hanging out with the Obamas at Barbara Bush’s funeral.
