Umbrella Academy, the comic series by former My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, is getting a Netflix adaptation.
Taking place in an alternate version of the 1970s, Umbrella Academy follows a dysfunctional superhero family with seven kids. Born unexpectedly at the same moment, all to different mothers, these superheroes were raised by an adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves. Known for its dark, Tim Burton-esque art style and genre-savvy comic book antics, it’s a little different from mainstream Marvel or DC superhero fare.
Cindy Holland, VP of original programming at Netflix, said, “This series will embrace the singular tone of the graphic novels—dark yet humorous, supernatural yet grounded in reality.”
Netflix has greenlit the TV series for 10 live-action episodes, beginning in 2018. It’s co-produced by Dark Horse, Umbrella Academy‘s publisher.
Jeremy Slater (Fox’s The Exorcist) wrote the pilot episode, while Steve Blackman (Altered Carbon) will act as showrunner.
