Claims of a mysterious hissing sound emanating from Apple‘s new iPhone 7s are arriving from multiple sources now. There appears to be no consensus among them, however, on what’s causing the noise.

The hissing was first reported by Stephen Hackett, cofounder of the Relay FM podcast network and a writer at 512px, according to Gizmodo. “My iPhone 7 Plus makes terrible noises when under load,” tweeted Hackett, along with a video of the hiss.

TechCrunch’s Darrell Etherington replied to Hackett saying his freshly unboxed iPhone 7 was experiencing the same issue.

Apple Insider suggested the noise might be produced by speaker interference from the phone’s radio frequency module.

On Twitter, American iOS developer Marco Arment offered up that there may be a good reason for the noise, but nevertheless said it was “unfortunate and ungraceful.”

Arment said the noise was the “equivalent of hearing the fans spin up loudly whenever your Mac’s CPU gets used to its actual potential.”

The Daily Dot reached out to Apple for comment and will update this story when the company responds.
