Want to read Reddit but don’t have the time? Our daily Reddit Digest highlights the most interesting or important discussions from around the social news site—every morning.

  • Last month, redditors raised nearly $100,000 in charity for the Faraja Children’s Orphanage in Kenya. Now, the orphanage is back with updates and pictures. They’re also looking for more direct feedback from redditors. “We believe you have earned a right to have a voice in our organization, but we’re just not sure how that should look and we knew that if we turned it over to you, then perhaps some wonderful ideas may emerge.” (/r/pics)

  • Moderator syncretic launches a discussion on Reddit trolls, spawning 250 comments. The main point of contention: does banning trolls actually work, or does it just encourage them? (/r/AskReddit)

  • Reddit briefly launches a campaign to “do something” for Stephen Colbert, who’s cancelled his show to take care of his sick mother. But the nascent campaign seems to have been quickly put down with this blunt comment from KyleFromNJ: “He didn’t want this known for a reason. That’s why it wasn’t an official announcement and it’s just unsubstantiated rumors at this point. Shut up and let the man be with his family. He’ll come out and talk when he’s ready to.” (/r/AskReddit)

  • Is there any organism that cannot perceive three dimensions? Perhaps, yes, but “you may as well say that this is a philosophical question … does perception matter if you cannot recognize and react to it?” (/r/askscience)

  • When Chris Brown was arrested for domestic abuse, the police necessarily made a corresponding, publicly available police report. That report was posted to r/WTF yesterday and then was mysteriously deleted by moderators along with dozens of comments. This outraged a lot of redditors. One mod resigned. Why the deletions? u/andrewsmith1986 explains: “Because it was a fucking witch hunt. We are not a lynch mob. If people call for us to harass someones twitter, they should be banned.” (/r/WTF)

  • Time reports that a giant supernova is about to explode, with a “a blast so violent that its flash will briefly outshine the entire Milky Way.” Sounds thrilling! r/science, as usual, puts a damper on my geeky excitement: “‘Any day now’ in astronomical terms means ‘maybe this millennium, but don’t hold your breath.'” (/r/science)
