What will they think of next?

It’s not news that some Pokémon designs can come from rather outlandish inspirations. Even the original 151 included bizarre Pokémon like Muk, a living pile of muck, and Magnemite, a Pokémon that is basically a ball bearing with magnets for ears.

But later iterations got weirder and weirder. With Pokémon like Nosepass, which is a giant nose reminiscent of an Easter Island Moai, or Klink, a creature that is literally two cogs with faces on them.

For the upcoming Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon games for the Nintendo 3DS, we’re getting at least four new creatures, one of which is an actual pile of sand that evolves into a sand castle.

Sandygast, the unevolved pile-of-sand Pokémon is a ghost/ground type combination that Nintendo literally describes as a “possessed lump of sand,” according to Polygon.

As easy as it would seem to just kick it out of existence, it can use a “water compaction” move that boosts its defense by two points. It can also, you know, suck the vitality right out of you, so watch out! This is no ordinary possessed lump of sand.

When Sandygast evolves, it becomes Palossand, which—depending on how you read it—can be like “pile of sand” or “palace sand.” Let’s go with the latter. Palossand can also use water compaction. It can also re-generate sand that it loses, and suck Pokémon into a vitality-sapping vortex of sandy doom.

The video also showed us two other Pokémon, including Stufful which is an actual stuffed animal complete with tag on its butt. It’s a normal/fighting type that hates being hugged. We don’t know much about its abilities yet but its evolution, Bewear, is more interested in giving hugs… that might just kill you if you don’t train it to hold back its strength. But you can use those crushing bear hugs to crush trees and your opponents, so this is a powerful Pokémon to have around.

The last Pokémon is the first one shown in the video. Crabrawler is a fighting crab Pokémon. It likes to be in high places, like on top of tall people or buildings. It can also use hyper cutter and iron fist moves in battle, or to shake berries from trees, which is said to be its favorite food.
