Freeform is getting into the superhero game. The network once known as ABC Family has reportedly ordered a straight-to-series television adaptation the Marvel comic Cloak and Dagger. The live-action show follows protagonists Tyrone and Tandy, two mutate forces of light and dark, as they navigate an interracial romance strained by teenage confusion that fans are certainly cheering on.

This step toward more inclusive superhero programming is a big one—reportedly a decision that had been brewing for years, according to Deadline Hollywood. It’s already got the backing of Marvel and the series is currently seeking a writer.

Executive VP of Marvel’s television division Jeph Loeb will serve as executive producer for Cloak and Dagger. Loeb’s executive production credits include such recent hits as Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Speaking with Comic Book Resources, Loeb had this to say about the latest show he’s set to back:

We are thrilled to be able to explore another corner of the Marvel Universe with Cloak and Dagger. We want to thank Tandy and Tyrone’s fans everywhere who have been waiting for this exciting news.

With Loeb’s support, the forthcoming series appears to be in good hands. However, some fans have been a bit skeptical given both Freeform’s network television status as well as its target audience, which the network refers to as “becomers.” That demographic reflects viewers from age 14 to 34.

As of this writing, there is no timeframe on when Cloak and Dagger will make its Freeform debut. Fans can also look forward to yet another superhero show hitting airwaves on the network quite soon. Freeform is said to be bringing an American version of the UK hit Misfits to audiences next. Josh Schwartz, whose previous credits including writing and production on Chuck, will be at the helm.
