Destiny is not developer Bungie’s finest work. What may be their finest work, however, will cost you zero dollars right now if you have an Xbox Live Gold account.

Games With Gold is a Microsoft promotion where if you pay the $59.99 to upgrade your Xbox Live account to Gold status (without which you can’t play online games on Xbox systems) you get a pair of free games every month.

Usually the selection of games isn’t terribly exciting. Last months’ offer of Dishonored was pretty cool, but this month Microsoft is offering what might be the best Halo game ever developed by Bungie.

Halo: Reach is a prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved, a tragic story about a team of Spartan super-soldiers, Noble Squad, who make a fighting retreat across the planet Reach, the last bastion of human military strength in their genocidal war with the alien Covenant.

This was the most polished version of Halo ever produced by Bungie, with a fantastic soundtrack by Martin O’Donnell (who also composed the wonderful music in Destiny). So if Destiny isn’t your cup of tea, give Reach a try. Once you download the game, it’s yours to keep forever.

Incidentally, the live-action commercial spots for Reach were fantastic.
