The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies may not arrive in theaters until Dec. 17, but thanks to the much-closer soundtrack release on Dec. 9 we’re already trying our best not to cry about this impending Middle-earth farewell. Though we were tearing up when the song that will play during the end credits, “The Last Goodbye,” premiered online to promote the soundtrack, that was nothing compared to the wave of sad nostalgia that hit us when watching its music video.
Premiering Friday on Entertainment Weekly’s website, the video shows actor and musician Billy Boyd singing in a studio intercut with clips from not just The Hobbit trilogy but The Lord of the Rings films as well. Clearly it wasn’t enough to just bring Boyd, who played the role of Peregrin “Pippin” Took in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, back into the fold to remind fans of Peter Jackson’s past Middle-earth work. Funny and sweet behind-the-scenes clips from both trilogies are also featured. With the Lord of the Rings footage looking so much older it definitely achieved the goal of making us feel nostalgic for those releases as it brought everything full circle.
“The Lord of the Rings films were such a special time for me in many ways—working with Pete, Fran, and Philippa, being in New Zealand, being part of Professor Tolkien’s work or even just the incredible friends I made,” Boyd told EW. “And being asked to go back to that, to work in that wonderful fantasy world again and to be singing the song that says goodbye to Middle-earth for everyone involved and the fans who took this beautiful journey with us is truly a great, great honor.”
The video and song are certainly a fitting, touching sendoff to the incredible journey fans have gone on through this fantasy world thanks to Jackson. You can watch the music video below—just don’t say we didn’t warn you about those tears.
