Car combat games may seem like a relic of the past, but developers at Stainless Games hope to bring them back to their former glory.

The developer just announced Carmageddon: Max Damage for PS4, Xbox One and PC, and the trailer is just as ridiculous as you would expect.

The concept of the Carmageddon games is heavily influenced by the 1975 movie Death Race 2000. It’s a timed racing game, in which the player has to reach the end before the clock runs out. If the player causes damage by destroying other cars or running over pedestrians, more time is awarded. The game was controversial when it first released, leading it to be censored in some countries. To soften the game, humans were replaced with zombies and blood was turned from red to green.

The original Carmageddon was released in 1997 on PC, and later on consoles in 1999. The PC version received good reviews, but the console ports weren’t as well received. Carmageddon hasn’t been in stasis since then. A few sequels have been released, including a port to iOS and Android in 2012 and 2013 respectively. In May of 2012, a Kickstarter was also launched for Carmageddon: Reincarnation. The Kickstarter was successful, and the game did finally release in 2015 to lackluster reviews.

Stainless Games hopes to release Carmageddon: Max Damage in mid 2016. Here’s hoping it can outdo its predecessor and live up to the original.
