Nicki Minaj announced on social media on Monday that she is pregnant.

Twitter and Instagram users erupted into bouts of congratulations for her and her husband Kenneth Petty. The first photo she posted with the caption, “#Preggers,” is boasting almost 10 million likes on Instagram.

She posted three more photos from a maternity shoot and one of the photos is with noted fashion photographer, David LaChapelle, which she captioned “The Virgin Mary.” Her comments were flooded by fans and fellow artists alike with well-wishes and congratulations.

“OMGGGGGG! You gonna be a mommy,” Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes wrote in her Instagram comments. Former collaborator Christina Aguilera also commented saying “Congrats beautiful.”

But not everyone is happy with Minaj’s decision to have a baby with Petty, a convicted felon and registered sex offender. According to the New York State database, Petty was convicted of attempted first-degree rape in 1995, and in 2006, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges. He served seven years in prison and was on a supervised release program for five years. He’s been off the program for only two years.

“Can’t believe Nicki actually did it,” Michael Cuby, editor at them, wrote on Twitter, “She got pregnant by a man that won’t be able to drive their child to school because he’s a registered sex offender.”

Many more echoed that sentiment.

“Lol @NICKIMINAJ how you feel knowing you cant invite other kids to your kids bday party if your baby daddy is around?” a Twitter user wrote.

When Nicki’s fans criticized her for being with a man like Petty, she defended him despite even the more recent incidents, like failing to register as a sex offender in California when he moved there from New York. He pleaded not guilty for those charges.

“He was 15, she was 16… in a relationship,” she said about the rape charges. “But go awf Internet. y’all can’t run my life. Y’all can’t even run y’all own life.”
