A real-time eye on Hurricane Irene

Two smart programmers have funneled photos from Instagram, a photo-sharing app, into a site for viewing the storm's impact.

What does a hurricane look like? TV networks give you the standard storm maps and reporters blustering in blustery weather. But Instagram, a photo-sharing app for the iPhone, lets people snap shots from all over, giving a very different picture of events.

Chris Ackermann and Peter Ng, two Web developers for the New York Times, whipped up a website—in their spare time!—that publishes photos shared on Instagram and tagged as related to Hurricane Irene. Instagram plus Hurricane Irene equals Instacane. Here’s a selection of the best photos we spotted on it.
