Ivanka Trump broke her silence on the mounting border crisis on Wednesday. She tweeted to thank to her dear ol’ dad for ending the immigrant family separation policy that he, in fact, started himself.
“Thank you @POTUS for taking critical action ending family separation at our border,” she wrote. “Congress must now act + find a lasting solution that is consistent with our shared values; the same values that so many come here seeking as they endeavor to create a better life for their families.”
Over 2,000 children have been violently separated from their families, the youngest in “tender age shelters,” due to President Donald Trump’s initiative to prosecute every person who crosses the border. Photos and audio from the facilities speak to the the emotional horror and trauma of such establishments.
Needless to say, Twitter users weren’t happy with Ivanka Trump’s statement. Critics said her tweet was long overdue, misinformed on the gravity of the issue, and insensitive to those directly affected by the policy.
Trump’s policy reversal will keep families housed together, for the most part, but does nothing to help bring families already separated back together. It sets into a motion a challenge to a previous court settlement requiring children who came with families to be released from detention centers within three weeks, according to CNN.
