Trump sparks outrage by calling impeachment ‘lynching’

People were furious with his choice of phrasing.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday called the efforts to impeach him a “lynching.”

“So some day, if a Democrat becomes President and the Republicans win the House, even by a tiny margin, they can impeach the President, without due process or fairness or any legal rights. All Republicans must remember what they are witnessing here – a lynching. But we will WIN!” the president tweeted.

It’s unclear if Trump realized he hasn’t been impeached, or that the House hasn’t scheduled a vote on impeachment, or even begun a formal impeachment inquiry, all of which they are likely to do—things known as due process—before he does potentially get impeached.

Trump declaring himself lynched, as the head of a nation with a history of lynching people of color, a way to terrorize them as they fought was equal rights, infuriated Twitter users.

According to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, over 4,400 African-Americans were the victims of lynching in the U.S.
