Like a game of presidential primary wack-a-mole, the moment one guy goes down, another pops right up. Yesterday brought the news that Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) dropped out of the 2020 primary. Enter Tom Steyer.

Steyer, a billionaire Democratic donor, has built a brand around Need to Impeach, his advocacy group that worked to impeach President Donald Trump.

Having apparently accomplished everything he set out to with Need to Impeach, Steyer is now setting his sights on the White House.

Steyer dropped an announcement video on Twitter today, declaring that: “It’s true. I’m running for president.”

In the video, Steyer (who is a billionaire), harps on corporate power and influence in politics, pushing a quasi-populist message about the system being rigged for the wealthy.

He also, in one strange sequence, calls America a “banana republic” and splices together footage of Donald Trump Jr., Jeffrey Epstein, and Flint, Michigan.

What those three have to do with one another is unclear. Steyer’s representatives did not respond to a request for comment about why Epstein was in his launch video. But if Steyer’s premise is that Epstein needs to be brought to justice for sex trafficking, well, he was arrested this weekend.

So maybe that’s not the best platform.
