The jokes came quick from Twitter.

Donald Trump Moon and Mars Tweet

President Donald Trump doesn’t appear to have a solid idea on what his administration’s plan for space exploration is.

In a tweet on Friday, Trump said that NASA should “NOT be talking about going to the moon,” despite tweeting just last month that the space agency would be “going back to the Moon, then Mars.”

“For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon – We did that 50 years ago. They should be focused on the much bigger things we are doing, including Mars (of which the Moon is a part), Defense and Science!” the president wrote on Friday.

While many people have joked that the president said that the Moon is part of the red planet, it’s likely (judging by his May tweet) that he meant going to the Moon would be part of the process in heading to the red planet.

Even though he said NASA shouldn’t talk about it, Trump, himself, talked about going to the Moon a few weeks ago.

Last month, the president said he wanted to include an additional $1.6 billion in his budget so the United States could “return to Space in a BIG WAY!”

“Under my Administration, we are restoring @NASA to greatness and we are going back to the Moon, then Mars. I am updating my budget to include an additional $1.6 billion so that we can return to Space in a BIG WAY!” he wrote on May 13.

So last month Trump said NASA was heading back to the Moon, but now is saying that the agency should “NOT be talking about” doing so.

Whatever.

Regardless of what he meant, Trump’s odd phrasing on Friday—writing that the Moon was “part of Mars”—was mocked by people on Twitter.
