Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is going to teach her fellow members of Congress how to more effectively use social media.
The youngest member of Congress will co-host a session on Thursday for the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, joined by Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.). The two aim to inform their fellow Democrats “on the most effective ways to engage constituents on Twitter and the importance of digital storytelling,” according to USA Today.
Ocasio-Cortez’s effective approach to social media has clearly caught the eye of her fellow lawmakers. Her impressive Twitter following of 2.44 million people is more than all 63 of the other incoming Democratic freshmen combined. Her transparent and relateable Instagram and Twitter posts have earned her a loyal following, something other Democrats could use to learn from.

We’re here doing our job - the House has voted to reopen government whole or in part several times - so why can’t we find GOP Senators to ask them do theirs? #WheresMitch pic.twitter.com/FogCPg6ayZ

“The older generation of members and senators is pretty clueless on the social media platforms,” Himes told USA Today in an interview. The decision to utilize AOC’s obvious expertise regarding social media is a good one. As Himes noted, people have “a real hunger for calling it like it is. For kind of opening the kimono on personal details. Are you a person? I think a lot of people believe politicians are manicured.”
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted out a confirmation of the class on Wednesday. “Perks of being in the Democratic Caucus,” she said. “I will be teaching a Twitter class tomorrow morning open to all members.”

Representatives from Twitter will join Ocasio-Cortez and the House Administration Committee for the class. According to a spokesman for Twitter, these types of classes are not uncommon, particularly at the beginning of a new Congress.
