Legalize marijuana is latest cause for hacktivists
Now, the group has vowed to undertake its most global effort yet: to support the international legalization of marijuana.
In advance of the movement, primed to launch on April 20 (get it?), Anonymous, or a faction, has released a statement on YouTube to explain its reasoning:
“For far too long cannabis has been oppressed by big corporations, big pharma, and governments when it could be benefiting all of mankind on many different levels. We have heard, and we have watched, your government lie and deceive you on all the dangers of cannabis.”
The video encourages slacktivists to indicate support by making their Facebook profile photos green on the movement’s launch date. Followers can also turn to the group’s Wordpress, Facebook, and Twitter accounts for updates.
Anonymous is likely to find significant support for this cause in particular. Legalization of marijuana has been a popular subject on Reddit and the most-popular item in President Barack Obama’s suggestion box.
Cannabis may sound like it’s just Anonymous’s cause of the week. However, given its track record, the organization isn’t likely to mess around. We’ve got a hunch that green profile photos are just the beginning, and we’ll be watching to see what the group has planned.
