Jim Carrey has drawn the ire of Alessandra Mussolini after Carrey depicted her grandfather in his latest political cartoon.
Carrey, whose political cartoons have garnered him both attention and pushback (depending on the subject), first posted it on Twitter Saturday. It featured Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and Claretta Petacci hanging upside down. (They were both executed by firing squad in April 1945, with their bodies hung upside down afterward for display.)
“If you’re wondering what fascism leads to, just ask Benito Mussolini and his mistress Claretta,” Carrey wrote.

Carrey didn’t offer any follow-ups to his cartoon, but less than a day later, Mussolini—who has defended her grandfather in the past—responded to the cartoon and took offense.
You are a bastard

Mussolini continued to taunt Carrey and asked him to draw political cartoons based on some of the U.S.’s more shameful moments in history if he wanted to criticize history.
Hi @JimCarrey now draw this for us pic.twitter.com/tDZ9RB1WLm

Mussolini, a far-right politician and a member of the European Parliament who’s been a fixture in Italian politics, has spent years pushing back against the public perception of her grandfather; she once said she would sue anyone who slandered him.
Her politics have garnered controversy for years, and she’s departed from one right-leaning Italian political party after its members denounced fascism.
Carrey has yet to respond to Mussolini.
