House Republicans exempted themselves from the Affordable Care Act’s insurance requirements in their latest attempt to repeal it. On Wednesday they pledged to be covered with the same healthcare plan as other Americans, should their latest repeal bill pass.

But Democrats accused GOP members of hypocrisy. By exempting themselves, GOP members would actually have Obamacare coverage protections while giving states the option to opt of of the requirements.

A Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesperson, Tyler Law, says GOP members’ exempting action serves as proof as to the “devastating” impact the Obamacare repeal bill would have.

“Republican members of Congress are exempting themselves from the punishment they are willing to inflict on their constituents,” Law told Politico.

Republican members claim the exemption was done to avoid violating Senate budget rules. Making Congress members abide to the new plan would have to involve referring this piece of legislation to a Senate committee. The process would eventually require the GOP to come up with 60 votes for a repeal plan.
