Former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server is apparently an issue that won’t end—even after her loss to President Donald Trump last November.
Fox News reports that the State Department has opened an ongoing investigation into Clinton and her staff’s use of a personal email system for U.S. government business, including the handling of classified material. The outcome of the State Department investigation could result in Clinton and her aides losing their security clearances.
Clinton’s use of the private email server has been debated ad-nauseam for years. The FBI wrapped up its investigation last year, declining to recommend the Department of Justice press charges against her or her staff for the mishandling of classified material.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, launched a separate investigation that began in March, Fox News reports.
Clinton’s emails have been the center of a partisan feud for years and were cannon fodder for Trump during his presidential run. Although Clinton was cleared of illegal activity, then-FBI Director James Comey did say Clinton was “extremely careless” in her use of the private email server.
The probe was re-opened shortly before the election, which Clinton has said she thinks played a role in her unexpected loss to Trump in November.
