Agent Carter actress Hayley Atwell did not mince words when asked for her opinion on Sharon Carter’s kiss with Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War. Like many Captain America fans, she wasn’t impressed by the film’s sudden introduction of a romance between Cap and his former love interest’s niece.

While Marvel Studios generally has a good track record with romantic subplots, Sharon Carter and Steve Rogers’ Civil War kiss was not well received. Sharon simply hadn’t been given enough screentime to set up a plausible love story in the context of the movie. To make matters worse, this all took place after the death of her aunt, Peggy Carter. (Peggy, of course, was characterized as the love of Steve’s life during the first two Captain America movies.)

Speaking at Dallas Comic Con this weekend, Hayley Atwell shared her opinion of how Peggy would react to Steve and Sharon’s kiss. Since IGN describes this as a pretty lighthearted exchange, we doubt that Atwell is actually upset about any of this.

“Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave,” said Atwell “She’d be like ‘no.’ And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass as well.”

“I wouldn’t want to date my great aunt’s guy. It just feels like it crosses an incestuous boundary. And Peggy just died. That’s even more disrespectful, right?”

She added that, in the context of the controversial new Captain America comic, Peggy probably wouldn’t want Sharon to date Steve anyway, due to “this whole ‘Hail Hydra’ business.”

Fair point.
