It’s impressive.

Chris Daughtry is one of the more successful performers to come out of American Idol over the years, and he just played Judas in Fox’s live event The Passion. Now he’s branching out into a new medium.

Daughtry is trying his hand at comings, creating one of the variant covers for Batman #50, which came out on Wednesday. It features Batman crouching as he faces Superman right before the release of Batman v Superman, and it looks incredible. He received some physical copies a couple days early and excitedly posted them to Instagram while revealing the progress the cover has made.

His entry into comic books wasn’t completely out of the blue. He connected with comic book artist Jim Lee on Myspace while he was still on American Idol, and over the years they became friends. Lee did artwork for one of Daughtry’s albums while Daughtry drew art for a charity auction at Lee’s request. When he was asked to draw the variant cover, Daughtry—a fan of Batman since 1984—jumped at the opportunity.

“I kept talking to him about possibly doing variant covers,” Daughtry told Uproxx. “I kind of hounded him a bit. We ended up being together at this Halloween party and he asked ‘Would you be interested in doing a cover in March of Batman v. Superman to help promote the movie?’ Of course, I said yes.”
