Microsoft envisioned a future in which our phones would become our computers with Windows 10 for Mobile and Continuum, but this Indiegogo campaign may make that dream come true.
The creators of NexDock are currently raising funds to manufacture the new laptop shells that run off your smartphone. Essentially, the device is a screen, keyboard, and battery that uses your phone as the main processing unit.
This works most ideally with the Lumia 950, as the Continuum feature allows your phone to be a stripped down version of Windows 10. But NexDock will also be compatible with iOS and Android. For those platforms, it would function more like a mirrored second screen. And of course, if you have one of those all-in-one PC sticks, those will work as well.
Speaking of second screens, you can also plug the NexDock into another computer and use it as another monitor, if you feel so inclined.
Pretty much any device that can output will be able to work on the NexDock. Even a Raspberry Pi.
NexDock’s developers do see a future where devices can more easily plug in. Right now, everything has to be done via USB Type-C, which can be clunky if you’re not using your NexDock on a table or desk. An ideal future would be the ability for devices to snap on to the NexDock, without wires.
Early backers can snag the NexDock for as little as $79. For those who missed the early bird special, it’ll run $119. The final retail NexDock will cost $149. Right now, there are backer goals, which, if met, could mean an extra USB Type-C port and a higher-resolution display.
