Online conspiracy theorists are looping Bulger’s muder into the Russia investigation.

When James “Whitey” Bulger died on Tuesday, it seemed like just the end of an era of violent mob crime.

But the denizens of r/The_Donald, the subreddit dedicated to Donald Trump and home to too many conspiracy theories to keep track of, saw something different. For some members of that subreddit, Bulger’s death, likely at the hand of fellow inmates, was something whipped up by the “Deep State” to distract from allegations of Robert Mueller’s supposed sexual misconduct.

The allegations against Mueller, which appear to have originated with a young Trump supporter named Jacob Wohl and have been dismissed as an elaborate hoax, came out on Tuesday, as well.

Bulger’s alleged status as an FBI informant, which he repeatedly denied, has apparently created a tenuous connection to Mueller, the former head of the FBI. But tenuous is good enough on Reddit; one post claims that Bulger and Mueller “go way back,” and that Bulger “was a loose end who could flop and blow everything up before the Middterms [sic] and had to be silenced.”

Another claims that Bulger was set to testify against Bill and Hillary Clinton on Friday, though where or for what crimes, the redditor doesn’t say.

Others claim that Mueller covered up Bulger’s crimes for decades, or merely find it suspicious that he was murdered and was allegedly also an FBI informant. However, snitches generally aren’t treated with much respect, either in the world of organized crime or in the prison system.

When it was reported by TMZ that the killer tried to remove Bulger’s tongue, it was too much to pass up.

Others claim that Bulger’s death was meant to distract from the claims against Mueller. Redditor The Pede Life Chose Me said, “MFW “Whitey” Bulger shows up DEAD and we know he was a previous FBI Informant for Mueller……..And NOW we see these rape allegations surface…..” above an image of right-wing meme Pepe the Frog.

The allegations against Mueller are strange and convoluted, but it appears that the story was generated by either Jack Burkman, a Seth Rich truther, or Jacob Wohl, a pro-Trump troll, to smear Robert Mueller while simultaneously trying to discredit the media from reporting on the accusations they were floating.

Wohl apparently created a company called SureFire Intelligence, which Burkman allegedly hired to dig into Mueller’s past. SureFire was quickly revealed to be a fake company created by Wohl; LinkedIn pages for supposed employees used photos of actor Christoph Waltz and model Bar Rafaeli, and the company’s telephone number linked back to Wohl’s mother’s number.
